The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, Nov. 19, edition that former vice-president Joe Biden believes weed may be a "gateway drug" that can lead users to harsher substances. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Biden may be at odds with much of his party when it comes to pot. Pot stocks including Canopy Growth, Aurora Cannabis, Cronos Group and Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF underperformed Monday, extending a slump that has plagued the sector following a brutal earnings season. Aurora was the biggest decliner in the S&P/TSX Capped Health Care Sector Index, down 13 per cent, while Aphria fell 9 per cent. This disparity on the topic came into full view at a town hall in Las Vegas over the weekend, when Mr. Biden drew some groans from the crowd by saying he wants to see more research on marijuana and suggesting that it may be a "gateway drug" that can lead users to harsher substances. "There's not nearly been enough evidence that has been acquired as to whether or not it is a gateway drug," Mr. Biden said. His comments come two days before the House Judiciary Committee mark-up of H.R. 3884, which would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level and reassess pot convictions.
