The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the United States military destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday following attacks on its warships, while Iran targeted American sites in Jordan, escalating tensions in their ongoing conflict. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that following American strikes, Iran launched missiles at U.S. targets in Jordan. Jordan's military intercepted 18 missiles, with two falling in uninhabited areas and no reported casualties. As a key U.S. ally housing American forces, Jordan is frequently targeted by Iranian strikes. The recent strikes represent a key element of President Donald Trump's strategy to address the ongoing conflict. Additionally, the administration imposed sanctions on Iran's aviation industry, impacting numerous airlines and cargo service providers. This new push aims to further isolate Tehran from its remaining trading partners. Rising energy prices are posing political problems for Mr. Trump and his Republican Party ahead of the November midterm elections. A barrel of international standard Brent crude briefly climbed as high as $99.46 (U.S.) on Tuesday. The U.S. forces also destroyed three Iranian oil tankers on Saturday.
