The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that the United States and Iran announced on Friday that they are nearing an agreement to end their conflict, with an initial deal expected to be signed soon. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi noted that while changes are possible, the tentative agreement shows Iran has emerged stronger from the situation. "Iran is the winner of the war with the U.S.," Mr. Araqchi said on state television. A memorandum of understanding proposes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, with negotiations on Iran's nuclear program to follow. An unnamed U.S. official said the deal met Mr. Trump's core objectives and put negotiations "in a very, very good place." Leaked terms of a proposed memorandum from Western, Pakistani and Iranian sources suggest a favourable stance toward Iran, drawing criticism from President Donald Trump, who labelled the reports inaccurate. While accounts varied slightly, they generally indicated that Tehran would receive much of its demands, while Mr. Trump gained little beyond the reopening of the strait, which Iran closed after U.S. and Israeli attacks in February.
