The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that the United States is close to a deal with Iran to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and have Iran relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, officials told the Associated Press. An AP dispatch to The Globe reports that U.S. President Donald Trump said he advised representatives "not to rush" into a deal, but noted that negotiations were progressing positively. However, the agreement will not be finalized yet, as earlier attempts to reach a deal have faltered. The reopening of the strait would alleviate the global energy crisis, which has caused a spike in oil, gas and related product prices. Experts estimate it could take weeks or months for shipping and prices to stabilize after the reopening. Under the potential deal, Tehran would give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. One official said how Iran would give up the uranium would be subject to further talks during a 60-day period. Some would likely be diluted, while the rest would be transferred to a third country, the official said. Russia has offered to take it. A U.S. official confirmed the 60-day period and said if Iran doesn't give up its stockpile there will be no sanctions relief.
