The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that the United States cannot leave it to other countries to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The Globe's contributing columnist John Rapley writes that like it or not, President Donald Trump is stuck there, and the only options he has left for leaving are unappealing. The U.S. exports crude oil and imports refined products for American cars and gas plants. This integration with the global market means the U.S. cannot isolate its oil market. While oil and gas companies profit, most Americans are feeling the impact, leading to inflation and higher interest rates, which tighten budgets in this car-loving nation. Time is running out to reopen the strait. If the strait is closed for months the impact on the world economy would be dire. If the White House cannot resolve this crisis soon, it may become very challenging for Americans and Canadians. Mr. Rapley says Mr. Trump's only two options now are a recession or a depression. Do not take the current calm in markets to mean much. After all, during the 1973 oil shock, stock markets only started falling after the ceasefire was agreed -- and then they fell hard. Mr. Rapley says this tale has only begun.
