The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Sept. 6, edition that a Tuesday court hearing to okay the Weston family's $12.5-million bid for the 1670 Royal Charter, which launched the Hudson's Bay Company, has been postponed due to interest from other bidders. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that financial advisers need more time to develop a process for determining the document's fate, which is historically significant. Amid HBC's dissolution, concerns regarding the preservation of its historic charter, bearing King Charles II's wax seal, have arisen from the federal government, first nations leaders and cultural groups. HBC faces a financial crisis with over $1-billion in debt and was granted court protection from creditors on March 7 under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. The Globe reported in April that HBC was considering selling the charter. It then issued a press release specifying that there would be a separate sale for its collection of art and artifacts, including the charter. The sale was on hold until HBC presented details of the auction process for court approval. On Friday, an HBC lawyer said the hearing scheduled for Tuesday had been adjourned and would be rescheduled.
