Globe says Hershey Canada buying Canopy's HQ for $53M

2023-08-18 06:39 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Aug. 18, edition that Canopy Growth announced on Thursday that it is selling 1 Hershey Dr. in Smiths Falls, Ont., to Hershey Canada for $53-million in cash for the eight-building facility. The Globe's Jameson Berkow writes that Hershey said it will start making candy treats again at the facility. The sale of Canopy's head-office building represents a rare profitable deal for the struggling weed producer as it attempts to cut hundreds of jobs and reduce costs in hopes of staving off defaulting on its mountainous debt load. Canopy, then known as Tweed Marijuana, acquired the former chocolate factory in 2013 for $7-million. Tweed co-founders Bruce Linton and Chuck Rifici purchased the property with a group of investors earlier that year from corporate barter company ICON International for just $1.6-million. At its peak in early 2019, when Canopy boasted a market cap of about $18-billion, the company employed more than 1,800 people in Smiths Falls. With a total population that has long hovered around 10,000, the community once known as Skid Falls was turned into a boomtown. Hershey had previously employed about 700 people in the 700,000-square-foot space.
