The National Post reports in its Saturday, Nov. 20, edition that new research has found that legalizing marijuana did not lead to an increase in driving related injuries in two provinces. A Postmedia dispatch to the Post reports that researchers analyzed 239,673 reports on emergency room visits in Alberta and Ontario in the four years leading up to October, 2018. The researchers compared the number of all moderate to severe car-crash injuries to those recorded in the 14 months after cannabis legalization. University of Northern B.C. psychologist Russell Callaghan says, "We found no increase in the overall rate of car accident injuries in adults or youth." Mr. Callaghan was the study leader. The results were published in the academic journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. Mr. Callaghan said: "I thought recreational marijuana use would lead to a greater likelihood of car accidents and injuries, but we didn't see that. It's possible the results may be due to the deterrent effects of stricter federal legislation, such as Bill C-46, coming into force shortly after cannabis legalization." The new traffic safety laws imposed more severe penalties for impaired driving due to cannabis.
