FP says Premier Ford has done well for Canopy, rivals

2021-11-12 09:00 ET - In the News

The National Post reports in its Friday, Nov. 12, edition that Ontario Premier Doug Ford's more useful acts of legislative heresy was punting weed retailing into the private sector. The Post's Chris Selley writes that the system is not perfect and retailers have various complaints. However, those certainly have not stopped pot shops from proliferating. It clearly has not eliminated the black market. However, according to Cannabis Benchmarks, legal options are significantly cheaper in Ontario than illegal ones. As government initiatives go in this province, it is something approaching a triumph. Some observers complain there are now too many pot shops making for too much competition. The Post notes, however, if Fred and Mabel's Smoke Shack gets forced out by big-money players like Tokyo Smoke or Spiritleaf -- which are owned by Canopy Growth and Sundial Growers -- that is sad for Fred and Mabel, but hardly unique in modern retail. Ontarians do have one legitimate beef: Under federal law, pot shops cannot display any cannabis or cannabis accessories in their windows. The obvious solution is to lobby Ottawa to get rid of the rule. Other than that, there is nothing bad happening here.
