Globe says Vermilion seen undeserving of a "buy" rating

2023-05-05 07:55 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that TD analyst Menno Hulshof is sticking with his "hold" recommendation for Vermilion Energy. The Globe's David Leeder writes in the Eye On Equities column that Mr. Hulshof knocked his share target back by $2 to $19. Analysts on average target the shares at $26.68. After a "relatively uneventful" first quarter, Mr. Hulshof thinks Vermilion Energy's operational and macro outlook has "the potential to improve dramatically into year-end." After the bell on Wednesday, the Calgary-based company reported quarterly production of 82,445 barrels of oil equivalent per day, down 4 per cent from the previous quarter but 1.9 per cent above the Street's expectation of 80,900 boe/d. Funds from operations per share fell 7 per cent to $1.48, missing the consensus estimate by three cents. Mr. Hulshof says in a short note, "Although Vermilion continues to represent deep value (2024E strip FCF yield of 27 per cent vs. peers at 14 per cent), it currently lacks the operating momentum and visibility to merit a 'buy' rating, in our view." The Globe reported on March 14 that Desjardins analyst Chris MacCulloch was sticking with his "buy" call on Vermilion. It was then worth $18.36.
