The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the contrast in the launches last week of the latest high-end sports cars from Tesla and Porsche reflect more than differences in the cars themselves. The Globe's Gus Carlson writes that the debuts -- staged on the same day -- were old school versus new school. In an austere, staid ceremony on a pier in Queens, New York, Porsche unveiled its latest supercar concept, the Mission S. The company said it was the same location used for the introduction of the 550 Spyder, to the United States in 1953. It reflected a classic, if trite, marketing strategy: lean on heritage. Meanwhile, 2,500 kilometres away in a darkened SpaceX testing facility in Waco, Tex., heritage took the day off. Tesla's new Roadster blasted off from a stage and went airborne from a ramp, propelled by cold-gas thrusters designed by SpaceX rocket engineers. The Tesla Roadster jumped a cluster of other cars, spun in the air and landed in a cloud of mist from the rockets. The crowd gasped and applauded. Tesla faithful will say the Roadster, whenever it comes to market and whether or not it can actually fly, is the future of personal travel. By contrast, the Mission S may be just another legacy dinosaur.
