The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that Chinese automaker BYD has posted a Toronto-based job for a manager to set up and oversee "BYD's flash-charging network expansion strategy and business growth across Canada." A Driving.ca dispatch to the Post says the megawatt-power chargers in that network would reportedly each be able to add 400 kilometres of range to an EV's battery in just five minutes. Of course, as with all things Chinese-EV-related, there is a caveat. To achieve such rapid charging, the megawatt charger needs to be plugged into a BYD electric vehicle outfitted with either the 1,000-volt Super e-platform; or the new second-generation Blade battery, which boasts a whopping 1,500-kilowatt charging capacity. Impressive when you consider that Tesla's new V4 Superchargers max out at 500 kW, and most North American EVs can only take, at the max, 350 kW. Electrek reports that there are nearly 6,000 flash-chargers up and running in China. With BYD tipping its hand with this new flash charging business development manager job posting, it's only logical the automaker would aim to bring its electric vehicles to Canada, too. So far, the federal cap on Chinese-made EVs is just 49,000 units.
