The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that now that the SpaceX initial public offering has made Elon Musk all but officially the world's first trillionaire, is it okay to despise him just for being one? Guest columnist Chris Gay writes that the eminent jurist Louis Brandeis once warned, "We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we cannot have both." Enter Elon. It was his wealth, not his political acumen or the strength of his ideas, that put him at the centre of government. No voter gave him political power; he simply bought it. By donating at least $250-million (U.S.) to the Trump campaign in 2024, this private citizen positioned himself to kill a congressional budget deal more or less single-handedly, and then create a bogus federal agency: the "Department" of Government Efficiency. He staffed it with college-age technobrats who among other things effectively dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development, which millions of people depended on for life-critical assistance, costing at least 762,000 lives by November, 2025. It may be difficult to excite class warfare in a culture that worships wealth, but people like Mr. Musk make it a whole lot easier.
