The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Feb. 17, edition that both Canadian and U.S. dividend-paying stocks have been underperforming in comparison to Big Tech. The Globe's John Heinzl writes that most technology stocks saw a significant increase at the onset of the pandemic when people were spending more time on their computers and shopping on-line. As pandemic restrictions eased and interest rates rose, these stocks experienced a decline, but they have been on the rise again recently. This is largely due to the increasing demand in anything and everything related to artificial intelligence, even if the connection is tenuous. This does not mean you should put all or most of your portfolio into tech stocks. When a sector is in vogue, stock prices often get ahead of themselves. The question that needs asking is not whether companies such as Microsoft and Nvidia will continue to grow -- they will -- but rather, whether their lofty stock prices are justified. The danger with jumping into red-hot sectors with both feet is that, if reality does not live up to expectations, you could get burned. Mr. Heinzl notes that high-flying Tesla is already starting to make some investors nervous.
