The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that after Canada's airlines announced this week they would suspend operations in Cuba, some Canadian travellers were left scrambling to find flights with carriers from other countries. The Post's Shantaé Campbell and Denise Paglinawan write that through Monday and Tuesday, Air Canada, WestJet/Sunwing and Air Transat said they would be sending empty aircraft to the island nation to pick up customers there on vacation. While Canadians who had purchased vacation packages through the airlines have been guaranteed a flight home, those who made their own travel arrangements were largely left to their own devices. "Many travellers underestimate the difference between booking a package vacation and arranging flights and accommodation separately," said Richard Vanderlubbe at travel agency Tripcentral in Hamilton, Ont. Katarína Nemcova from Toronto is in Havana awaiting a flight home. On Tuesday, she received a notice from WestJet that her flight back to Toronto, scheduled for Feb. 19, had been cancelled. Luckily, after almost an hour on the phone, WestJet was able to help Ms. Nemcova book a flight with Aeromexico, departing next week, but with a six-hour layover.
