The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that India seeks more Canadian oil and gas to support its growing economy, but regulatory hurdles and insufficient infrastructure are hindering progress, according to Dinesh Patnaik, India's High Commissioner to Canada. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that over the next 25 years, India will account for half of the world's increased oil demand. Currently, India imports about 90 per cent of its oil and gas, mostly from the Middle East, and has faced challenges since the war in Iran began. Now, it is looking for "unhindered supplies from jurisdictions which are safe, reliable and which do not change with geopolitical risks," Mr. Patnaik said in Calgary on Wednesday. Therein lies the opportunity for Canada. Canada struggles to transport fossil fuels to regions in need, like India, which is a common concern for Alberta's oil sector and fuels the push for a new pipeline to the West Coast. "We're buying Canadian resources through the U.S. -- through the Gulf Coast, through other channels -- but we still haven't set up the system for us to be able to buy in bulk from Canada," he added. "You have the resources the world needs, but you're letting it lie in the ground."
