The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Dec. 8, edition that a slim majority of Canadians and British Columbians would support building a new oil pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast, even if the B.C. government opposes it, according to a new poll. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that a Nanos Research poll reveals that 56 per cent of Canadians support building a new oil pipeline, with 55 per cent in favour of lifting the ban on tanker traffic to enable it. About 37 per cent oppose each measure. The poll surveyed 1,009 Canadian adults from Nov. 29 to Dec. 2, and is accurate within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. The survey follows the recent signing of an energy accord by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, which enables a new oil pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast. The B.C. government opposes the plan, but a recent poll shows 57.4 per cent of residents support a new pipeline. Polls show support for pipelines has declined since earlier this year. A Nanos survey in April found nearly 75 per cent of Canadians favoured an east-west pipeline for oil and LNG, while a July Environics poll indicated strong backing for a new oil pipeline to either coast.
