The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that there is talk that Canada's zombie pipeline, Keystone XL, may get exhumed. Postmedia's Chris Varcoe writes that more than four years after the cross-border oil pipeline was seemingly laid to rest by former U.S. president Joe Biden, the idea is making a revival, of sorts, brought on by the shifting winds of U.S. politics. Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed the idea of Keystone XL during his meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday and expressed renewed national interest in the pipeline from the Canadian side in the broader context of potential co-operation on energy being linked to progress on steel and aluminum tariffs. The two sides agreed it could be an area for follow-up discussions. "Keystone XL has become some weird meta-meme in the place of actual progress in Canada's oil industry. Never built, but never fully dead, always there when someone needs it," economist Rory Johnston wrote on X. Others have called it a zombie pipeline, as the idea seemingly cannot be killed. Premier Danielle Smith took time from lobbying for a West Coast pipeline to show her support for Mr. Carney's XL pitch following a spat with B.C. Premier David Eby.
