Globe says Fortis sees the PRGT project challenged

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that lawyers for climate activists are challenging the British Columbia government's ruling that supports the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline. The Globe's Brent Jang writes that co-owned by the Nisga'a Nation and Western LNG, PRGT will run through Northern B.C. The $12-billion PRGT pipeline is meant to feed the $10-billion Ksi Lisims LNG project, which would produce liquefied natural gas for export to Asia. Ecojustice lawyers Matt Hulse and Daniel Cheater appeared in B.C. Supreme Court on Monday to represent the petitioners. The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition, the Kispiox Valley Community Centre Association and local resident Kathleen Larson are the petitioners seeking a judicial review. They seek to quash a ruling last June that the pipeline project has been substantially started. The respondents are PRGT, the Nisga'a Nation and B.C. Environment Minister Tamara Davidson. The court hearings started on Monday and are expected to conclude early next week. PRGT received its environmental assessment certificate in 2014 and got a five-year extension in 2019, allowing until November, 2024, to begin pipeline construction to keep the certificate active.
