The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Dec. 9, edition that a potential pipeline to the West Coast has created strange political bedfellows. The Post's Catherine Levesque writes that Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet met with British Columbia Premier David Eby on Dec. 2, shortly after Ottawa signed a memorandum with Alberta for a new bitumen pipeline. Mr. Blanchet offered his help to B.C. and Mr. Eby's team and quickly co-ordinated a virtual meeting. Mr. Blanchet said they agreed that, on certain subjects, they were on the same page. He said the memorandum of understanding between Alberta and the federal government sets a "precedent" that he does not want to see repeated in Quebec. "On the protection of British Columbia's jurisdiction, of course, we will be a staunch ally of the Eby government," said Mr. Blanchet, shortly after their meeting. Without disclosing the details of their conversation, the Bloc leader described his exchange with Mr. Eby as "very cordial." A spokesman for Mr. Eby confirmed a meeting with Mr. Blanchet took place last week but downplayed its importance. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he respects the rights of provinces, including B.C.
