The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Feb. 23, edition that access to banking services is essential for participation in the economy and society. The Globe's guest columnists Maggie MacDonald and Val Webber write that however, for many Canadian workers in adult industries, the promise of universal financial access has failed. "Debanking" excludes marginalized workers from essential economic infrastructure, creating a two-tiered system of financial access with severe consequences. Kate Sinclaire, a successful content creator, runs two independent adult sites but faced difficulties securing merchant accounts. She said: "None of the five major banks I spoke with would open an account for me. It left me feeling completely shut out, as if my positive business plans were somehow wrong." Ms. Sinclaire is not alone. Many adult workers face denied merchant services and transaction processing. They report frozen or closed personal accounts without warning, making it difficult to receive income, obtain loans or build credit histories. This loss of banking disrupts their ability to acquire basic goods and services, secure housing, or save money, hindering their participation in public life.
