The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, May 12, edition that Telus plans to build two data centres in Vancouver and expand a facility in Kamloops to support artificial intelligence workloads, requiring over 150 megawatts of electricity by 2032. A triple bylined item led by Pippa Norman reports that the data centre in Kamloops will come on-line later this year, as will a data centre in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. That facility will scale up through 2028. The third, a new development by BC Place in downtown Vancouver, will become operational in 2029. The project will receive federal support as the first successful applicant under an AI data-centre program by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. Details of Ottawa's involvement are currently limited. "This expansion will ensure we meet the continued demand and serve growing AI ecosystems coming from Canadian businesses, entrepreneurs, start-ups, researchers and, yes, government at all levels,"Telus chief executive officer Darren Entwistle said at a press conference in Vancouver on Monday morning. Telus -- like its rival, Bell Canada -- has been investing in AI and data centres in recent years in search of new areas of growth.
