The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Telus chief executive officer Darren Entwistle has reclaimed the title of best-paid telco boss, despite a sagging share price. The Globe's David Milstead writes that Telus paid Mr. Entwistle $21.06-million in 2023, up from $17.49-million in 2022 and $19.82-million in 2021. Proxy adviser Glass Lewis, in its advisory report to shareholders in advance of Telus's May 9 annual meeting, recommended a "no" vote on the company's non-binding advisory vote on executive compensation. Glass Lewis also gave Telus a "D" grade in its pay-for-performance model. The biggest part of the package was $16.81-million in stock awards -- up nearly $2.4-million from 2022. The CEOs of Rogers and BCE made less than $14-million in 2023. Glass Lewis pointed out that Telus stock had a negative return in 2023 when dividends were included. Telus argues that its has aligned its pay practices with shareholder returns, noting that the decline in the share price has cut the disclosed value of Mr. Entwistle's pay in the past three years. In 2023, Telus missed all of its goals in its corporate-performance score card. Telus stock was $27.20 at the end of March, 2023; it closed Thursday at $22.38.
