The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that complaints about phone, Internet and television services were up 43 per cent halfway through its reporting year. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe says that a report by the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services (CCTS), which measured complaints from customers between Aug. 1, 2023, and Jan. 31, 2024, found an "alarming" rise in those related to overcharges on bills. "We know complaint numbers fluctuate from year to year, from period to period," CCTS commissioner Howard Maker said. "But a 43-per-cent increase is the kind of increase we don't generally see and it is a cause for concern." Incorrect charges were the top issue, as customers complained more than 3,000 times about apparent inaccuracies related to their monthly plans. The issue came to the forefront in January when some Rogers and Bell customers reported receiving notifications that their bills were set to rise. Of the 10,663 complaints accepted by the commission over the six months, Rogers accounted for 26.4 per cent of the total. With 2,820 complaints, Rogers saw a 117.9-per-cent increase in reports to the commission from its customers compared with the same period last year.
