Post says Telus helps Alberta cope with its unhappiness

2023-09-25 07:21 ET - In the News

The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that Alberta's conservatives have, for a couple decades now, held close the idea of withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan. The Post's Tyler Dawson writes that on Thursday, the UCP released a report, done by a unit of Telus Health, that lays out how Alberta might go about this process: Alberta, the report said, would be entitled to a $334-billion transfer from the national pension plan -- a staggering 53 per cent of the CPP's total assets. Mr. Dawson goes through the never-ending list of grievances Alberta has against its place in Confederation, starting with John A. Macdonald's National Policy of 1878. In 1982, Anita Bozak, a Western Canada Concept Party member, argued that the Heritage Savings Trust Fund should be liquidated to fund among other things an Alberta pension plan. The matter resurfaced in the 2020 report by the Fair Deal Panel struck by former premier Jason Kenney. Quebec, of course, has pursued an effective strategy of building its own institutions, being less a part of Canada in a variety of ways. Alberta wants to mimic Quebec's success. One question is whether a Pierre Poilievre government would help or hinder Alberta's move to make CPP parochial.
