Sernova Biotherapeutics Inc., responding to a wrongful dismissal lawsuit from former chief financial officer David Swetlow, says that it had good reasons to fire Mr. Swetlow. Among other things, he was "grossly incompetent" in his job and misused his position to provide personal benefits such as a paid vacation to Italy, Sernova claims. Sernova asks that Mr. Swetlow's lawsuit be dismissed, and has countersued to recover the improper payments.
The statements from Sernova come in response to a lawsuit that Mr. Swetlow filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia on Dec. 2, 2025. Mr. Swetlow complained that the company fired him after claiming that it had learned of "potential serious misconduct." He said that the company did not give him a full opportunity to respond to those allegations and that an investigation by an outside law firm ultimately turned up nothing. He sought damages that included $270,000 for lost stock options and up to 24 months of salary.
