The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, July 13, edition that the U.S. military has initiated new strikes against Iran to limit its capacity to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that these strikes followed a military response to an Iranian attack on a container ship the previous day. Iran responded with attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman. The United States struck again later in the day. Explosions were heard in the coastal city of Bandar Abbas and Hajiabad to the north. A U.S. official reported strikes on missile and air defense systems, as well as Revolutionary Guard boats, to weaken Iran's capacity to target commercial shipping. Iran and the U.S. are nearly at the midway point of the 60-day period of their interim deal aimed at reaching a permanent end to the war. The strait has become a sticking point in negotiations that seem in danger of collapse. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, "A return to full-scale hostilities would have catastrophic consequences." On Sunday President Donald Trump told NBC's Meet the Press, "We bombed the hell out of them last night." The U.S. military and Mr. Trump say the strait remains open.
