Globe says Suncor hears Alberta separation just dumb

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that if the side in favour of an Alberta separation referendum wins, and this leads to a binding vote next year that the leave side wins, we could envision Alberta negotiating an Albexit and becoming an independent country. The Globe's Tony Keller writes that he does nor think that is going to happen. Neither do the polls. But let's say it did. Does anyone really think this makes it easier for Alberta to export oil, produce it or attract investment? Building a new pipeline to tidewater is hard enough as part of Canada; imagine how impossible it would be if Alberta becomes a landlocked state. Ottawa pushed the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion despite British Columbia's objections and plans to pursue a new one-million-barrel-a-day pipeline to the Pacific. While this makes economic sense, it may change if Alberta exits Canada. Canada adds up to more than the sum of its parts, and the whole country will lose if Alberta leaves. But because Alberta is the smaller, landlocked party, it will lose more. Even if Albertans vote to remain in Canada, uncertainty about the province's future status will likely deter investment in Alberta's oil, gas and infrastructure.
