The National Post reports in its Wednesday edition that U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra is "encouraged" by the energy deal between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, believing it will boost oil and gas production. The Post's Stephanie Taylor writes that Mr. Carney, however, faces domestic criticism, with B.C. Premier David Eby noting that no one has proposed building a pipeline.
When it comes to the Canada-U.S. relationship, however, oil had formed part of the negotiations between Mr. Carney and President Donald Trump in exchange for reprieve from tariffs, before the U.S. President called off the talks in late October. It was also set to cover uranium.
Earlier that month, the Prime Minister suggested reviving the Keystone XL pipeline during his meeting with the President, with his government linking it to seeing progress on tariffs.
Mr. Hoekstra says any agreement the United States strikes with Canada will include oil.
On Monday, Mr. Hoekstra said: "What the expectations are on oil is that there would be more oil capacity, production and export opportunities down to the United States. ... That's what we're looking for."
