The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, July 14, edition that BMO Capital Markets analysts downgraded several Canadian energy stocks, expecting to see generally weaker quarter-over-quarter results owing to challenges presented by wildfires, heavy oil sands maintenance activity and weaker natural gas prices. The Globe's Darcy Keith writes in the Eye On Equities column that among them was Suncor Energy. BMO analyst Randy Ollenberger says in a note: "Despite the company possessing peer-leading downstream operations, we believe it still has a lot of work to do to get back into investors' good graces. Poor performance at Fort Hills, coupled with the looming base mine depletion date, has created an overhang on the share price. We believe Suncor's shares will continue to underperform its large cap Canadian peers until these issues are resolved." Mr. Ollenberger cut his target price by $8 to $44. He downgraded his rating to "market perform" from "outperform." Analysts on average target the shares at $50.61. The Globe reported on May 30 that National Bank Financial analyst Travis Wood continued to rate Suncor Energy "outperform." The shares could then be had for $38.80.
