The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Sept. 19, edition that Stifel analyst Ian Gillies has reaffirmed his "hold" and $37 share target for Stelco Holdings. The Globe's David Leeder writes in the Eye On Equities column that analysts on average target the shares at $44.93. The Globe says Mr. Gillies thinks it is a "complex" time for steel stocks with near-term performance appearing "biased lower for the well known issues stemming the UAW strike." He thinks it is a an "opportune time to zag against the crowd." He says the strike will end and demand will return. He notes that we might see a "sharp" pickup in demand trying to make up for lost volumes. Mr. Gillies says in a note: "Stelco offers investors a focused return-on-capital strategy aided by strong insider alignment. Financially, the company delivers industry-leading EBITDA margins, which leads to strong FCF conversion. Demand trends are favourable for Stelco, given healthy government spending policies and the potential for a recovery in North American light-duty vehicle productions. We believe the significant volatility of steel producer estimates adds increased risk to the name, and therefore we remain on the sidelines despite the favorable return to our target price."
