Globe says Sherritt's price sags, but CEO makes killing

2023-09-01 09:06 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Sherritt's shares are down 97 per cent from their all-time high of $18 in October, 2007. The Globe's David Milstead writes that the stock's low point was seven cents in March, 2020, but is up to 46 cents recently. Sherritt dispensed with stock options thanks to criticism that miners and other resource companies can see the value of their shares -- and, in turn, their stock options -- rise considerably when the commodity they sell jumps in price. To replace options, Sherritt devised a stock program based on performance-share units (PSUs). When your stock sells for pennies, an executive's pay package can include an awful lot of shares -- and that sets the stage for an outsized return. In March of 2020, Sherritt wanted to give chief executive officer David Pathe a PSU award valued at $875,000, as part of a $5.2-million pay package. Sherritt stock was trading at 16 cents per share at the time, so he received 5.46 million PSUs. Mr. Pathe's 5.46 million PSUs turned into 8.03 million shares. Because the stock was worth 51 cents per share on the Feb. 28, 2023, payout date, he received $4.09-million in cash. Nice growth for a grant valued at $875,000 three years before.
