The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Montreal-based Deep Sky on Monday became the first North American company to deliver verified carbon removal credits from direct air capture (DAC) technology, announcing it provided credits to Microsoft and Royal Bank of Canada. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says DAC differs from traditional carbon capture technology, which filters CO2 at industrial sites before it enters the atmosphere. Instead, DAC removes carbon directly from the air, addressing emissions that have already been released. Deep Sky chief executive officer Alex Petre says, "This shows Canada is building, is taking the risks and it puts us on the map for innovation in carbon removal." The only other company that has generated DAC credits is Climeworks, whose Iceland facility is the world's largest DAC complex. Scientists consider DAC essential for climate stabilization, but it is costly and challenging to scale. Nonetheless, there is strong global demand for high-quality, verified carbon removal credits. Deep Sky's Alberta pilot facility is designed to allow multiple DAC companies to deploy and fine-tune their technologies. Deep Sky is aiming to capture 3,000 metric tonnes of CO2 annually.
