The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday, Feb. 11, edition that the loonie is rising against the greenback, but analysts warn this should not be mistaken for true strength as traders adjust their bets. The Post's Gigi Suhanic writes that Rosenberg Research & Associates president David Rosenberg says the Canadian dollar, excluding the U.S. dollar, has stagnated over the past two months and has underperformed compared with currencies like the Australian and New Zealand dollars. He says the Canadian dollar should perform better given the commodity markets, citing historic gold, silver, copper prices, and recent rising crude oil prices. The loonie is down 4.5 per cent this year against the Australian dollar and 3.5 per cent against the New Zealand dollar. Mr. Rosenberg says the two Australasian countries have enough internal demand to sustain higher interest rates and have fostered the development of their resource sectors, and their closest trading ties are with Asia, where most of the world's growth is occurring. Mr. Rosenberg says, "Canada shares none of these attributes, sad to say." He adds that President Donald Trump's apparent loathing for Canada makes the loonie less attractive to investors.
