The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that six Métis nations in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which includes Fort McMurray, want a meeting with Ottawa and Alberta after they were left in the dark when the feds revealed details about a proposed West Coast pipeline. Postmedia's Graison Foster writes that the project, Pacific Link, would carry oil from Alberta to the British Columbia coast. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa would fast-track it as a project of national interest. Leaders of the Métis communities told reporters that none of them has been consulted since talks on the project began this summer. They say Ottawa met first nations leaders the day before the announcement, but that no Métis leader was invited. The leaders say the exclusion came after Mr. Carney reaffirmed Canada's commitment to reconciliation at National Day for Truth and Reconciliation events. Their joint statement calls the Prime Minister's commitment a "hollow promise." The statement says equity ownership and co-development of pipeline conditions went only to those invited. It says Mr. Carney's plan to break ground on Sept. 1, 2027, less than 11 months away, shows Ottawa is failing its consultation obligations.
