The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Ottawa has asked Canadian oil producers to evaluate how much crude they can release into the market, as the Iran war disrupts a fifth of global supplies. The Globe's Emma Graney and Jeffrey Jones write that this request follows urgent discussions among G7 countries and the International Energy Agency to enhance supplies and stabilize energy markets, which have surged to near four-year highs since U.S. and Israeli bombardments of Iran began on Feb. 28. G7 energy ministers decided not to release strategic oil reserves during their Tuesday meeting. Instead, they requested the IEA to assess market conditions and supply security, which will guide any future decisions on releasing emergency stocks from the IEA's 32 member countries. Those countries hold more than 1.2 billion barrels of public emergency oil stocks, with a further 600 million barrels of industry stocks held under government obligation. Energy Minister Tim Hodgson said there is no specific deadline for a decision. Mr. Hodgson said, "Canada was clear in the meeting that if there is a desire for a co-ordinated, multilateral release of strategic reserves, we will do our part."
