The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Wealthsimple is partnering with prediction market Kalshi for its new trading product, giving Canadians access to contracts from the largest such platform in the United States and thus allowing them to wager on real-world events. The Globe's Meera Raman writes that the on-line financial services platform said it plans to roll out Wealthsimple Predict, a stand-alone app, later this summer, but gave no specific launch date. The app will provide users access to nearly 4,000 contracts trading on Kalshi and will not include Kalshi branding. The new product follows Wealthsimple receiving approval from the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization in March to offer what are known as forecast contracts, a type of bet on real-world events that has been largely off limits for Canadians until recently. However, the contracts available to Canadians will be limited to categories permitted under CIRO rules, including economic indicators, financial markets and climate-related events. That means Canadians using Wealthsimple Predict will not be able to trade on contracts tied to sports outcomes or elections. Kalshi processed $17.9-billion (U.S.) in trading volume in May alone.
