The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Toronto's airports authority has announced a multibillion-dollar plan to update and modernize Pearson Airport. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe quotes Greater Toronto Airports Authority said it launched the first phase of procurement for Pearson LIFT (Long term Investment in Facilities and Terminals), a plan intended to help the airport meet growing demand. Deborah Flint, chief executive officer of GTAA, called it a "decade-long investment" to improve "tired and aged assets across the airport." Pearson saw 45 million passengers in 2023 and is expecting 65 million annually by the early 2030s. The program will see the modernization of existing airport assets, including high-speed taxi lanes, updated airfield electric lighting and control system, and interim terminal facilities. The plan also includes investments in power generation to help the airport achieve net-zero targets. Over the long term, Ms. Flint said she expects some moderate increases in Pearson's Airport Improvement Fee, in consideration of the levels of such fees at other airports in the country. GTAA chairman Doug Allingham said in a statement the organization is aiming for "sustainable growth."
