The White House called it a financial bridge to a less subsidy-dependent future. The funds, due by the end of February, echo payments made to farmers during Mr. Trump's first term, referred to as trade aid for Chinese reprisals against White House policies. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins described the $11-billion (U.S.) payment, plus an additional $1-billion (U.S.) for specialty crop farmers, as restitution for former president Joe Biden's policies. She emphasized the need for this funding to enable farmers to focus on sustainable practices that support their families and future generations. She said, "This bridge is absolutely necessary based on where we are right now."
