The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Dec. 6, edition that Nutrien's Brazilian retail operations are its latest assets up for review as the company continues to pursue an aggressive strategy to boost cash flow. The Globe's Kate Hellmore writes that Nutrien said it was re-evaluating its Brazilian retail footprint at an investor sit-down with Raymond James last week. This decision is part of a strategy to cut costs by $200-million across operations and corporate functions, as committed at the investor day in June, 2024 (all figures U.S.). Nutrien announced a review of its phosphate division in early November, closed its Trinidad nitrogen operations in October, sold its stake in Hong Kong's Sinofert for $200-million and divested its 50-per-cent stake in Argentina's Profertil for $600-million. Raymond James analyst Steve Hansen says, "Nutrien is making a concentrated effort to look at every asset individually and trying to determine what kind of free cash flow and capital attributes they have." Nutrien's Brazilian retail operations have encountered significant challenges recently, including a $335-million impairment announced last August, contributing to total writedowns of about $800-million for 2024.
