Globe says Ottawa presses Nutrien to reverse plan

2025-11-24 07:15 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Nov. 22, edition that Ottawa is disappointed with Nutrien's decision to invest up to $1-billion in a U.S. potash terminal and hopes to persuade it to invest in Canada instead. The Globe's Kate Helmore and Mark Rendell write that Transport Canada will meet with Nutrien executives soon to persuade them to reconsider, said Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon. On Wednesday, Nutrien announced it had chosen a port in Longview, Wash. -- a move critics have called a failure for Prime Minister Mark Carney's government. Ottawa aims to expedite approvals for large resource and infrastructure projects and has pledged billions to enhance transportation links, aiming to double non-U.S. exports to about $600-billion. Should Nutrien proceed with its plan, by 2031, it will be shipping as much Canadian-mined potash to fast-growing markets in Asia through U.S. ports as through Canadian ports. "Saskatchewan potash should be moved out of a Canadian port," Mr. MacKinnon said on Friday. He said he spoke with Nutrien chief Ken Seitz after the company's announcement, as well as Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe to "discuss a potential response to this."
