The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Nutrien announced it will sell its 50-per-cent interest in Argentina's nitrogen producer Profertil for $600-million (U.S.), shifting focus away from South America. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that agribusiness firms Adecoagro and Asociacion de Cooperativas Argentinas will jointly acquire the interest in an 80-per-cent to 20-per-cent partnership. Nutrien announced that YPF, which holds the other 50 per cent of Profertil, has 90 days to exercise its right of first refusal. In March, 2024, Nutrien was considering selling its assets in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay after losses in the region.
Nutrien faced issues in South America as Russia's invasion of Ukraine caused prices to soar in 2022, only to collapse the following year. Earlier this year, Nutrien's Brazilian unit announced plans to sell its fertilizer blending plants. Nutrien reported about $60-million (U.S.) in proportionate earnings from its Profertil interest over the last four quarters. Nutrien chief executive officer Ken Seitz said in a statement, "The agreement to sell our equity stake in Profertil advances our strategy to focus on assets and geographies that are core to our long-term vision."
