The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that this week, China imposed a 75.8-per-cent preliminary anti-dumping duty on Canadian canola, jeopardizing $5-billion in annual exports. The Globe's guest columnist Omar Saleh writes that this crisis presents an opportunity. Canola has emerged as a viable feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is chemically identical to conventional jet fuel but has up to 90 per cent lower life-cycle emissions. It can be used in existing engines with no modifications. Canada can lead in oil production with new high-oil crop varieties that thrive on Class 4 marginal lands in Saskatchewan and Alberta. This approach avoids pressure on food systems and preserves premium farmland, thanks to advancements in science and crop genetics. Canada has potential for global leadership due to its agricultural output and storage capabilities. Alberta's advanced carbon-capture network is key in distinguishing low-carbon SAF from ultralow-carbon SAF needed to secure international contracts. Mr. Saleh says the necessary infrastructure is already in place. The Prairies have the feedstock, land, logistics, refining and emissions solutions -- elements no other country possesses together.
