The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that Ottawa's cultural policy is largely defined by the Online Streaming Act, which mandates that broadcasters and streaming services promote Canadian stories and music, and support a diverse broadcasting system. The Post's David Clement writes that Ottawa seeks to impose traditional regulations on innovative platforms like Netflix, Spotify and YouTube, despite their success in meeting consumer demand, contrasting with Ottawa's approach of requiring companies to produce Canadian content regardless of audience interest. The CRTC wants large on-line streaming services to contribute 15 per cent of their Canadian revenues to Canadian content, tripling the previous requirement from 2024. This could create one of the most aggressive streaming frameworks globally, with extra costs likely passed on to Canadians. Cancon regulation dictates consumer preferences and compels companies to adapt. When the market fails to respond, Ottawa only intensifies its efforts. We all want Canadian artists and content creators to thrive. But the Canadian media space is now mature enough to stand on its own. Success should be earned by meeting consumer demand, not submitting to government decree.
