The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, July 8, edition that Elizabeth Stone is not your conventional chief technology officer. The Globe's guest columnist Amber Dowling writes that the Netflix exec joined the company in 2020 as vice-president of product data science and engineering. A graduate of MIT and trained economist from Stanford, she previously worked as a trader at Merrill Lynch and is also a former competitive swimmer and triathlon enthusiast. Since earning her current title three years later, she has combined her athletic mindset with a competitive business strategy to enhance Netflix's technological edge. Ms. Dowling says Ms. Stone is just getting started, with big goals for Netflix, including innovations in advertising, live events and games. Netflix has been a leader in streaming user experience, introducing features like "play next," "skip intro" and personalized recommendations that many others have adopted. This past May, under Ms. Stone's leadership, Netflix unveiled a new TV experience update that includes a refreshed home page, improved real-time recommendations, easier-to-see shortcuts and new search methods utilizing generative artificial intelligence.
