The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that in today's sea of streaming TV thrillers, Zero Day stands out with Robert De Niro in his first leading role in a television series. The Globe's J. Kelly Nestruck writes that despite being a two-time Oscar winner, this six-part Netflix show marks his TV debut, as his appearances on Saturday Night Live do not count as leading roles. Even after lengthy films like The Irishman, Mr. De Niro has officially had zero small-screen leading performances until now. In Zero Day, Mr. De Niro features front and centre as George Mullen, a former president of the United States and a unicorn of sorts widely described as the last such politician in memory able to rally significant bipartisan support. Mr. Mullen only served one term, however, not seeking re-election after his son died under circumstances that are gradually revealed. Following a cyberattack called "Zero Day," which disrupts all U.S. communications and power for one minute, President Evelyn Mitchell (Angela Bassett) enlists Mr. Mullen to investigate. Tasked with leading a commission and granted exceptional powers, including the suspension of habeas corpus, he aims to uncover the culprits and prevent further attacks.
