The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Wall Street's indexes rose on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 reaching an intraday record high, driven by positive earnings from Netflix and U.S. President Trump's $500-billion artificial intelligence infrastructure investment plan. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the technology sector led gains, rising 2.5 per cent, mostly due to Nvidia and Microsoft. Netflix surged 9.7 per cent after posting a record number of holiday quarter subscribers. Only tech and communications services saw daily gains, while utilities declined by 2.2 per cent. BCA Research's Irene Tunkel says, "This is just the excitement about the technology investments." She notes the market's narrow breadth on Wednesday. "Everything else just cannot compete with it." Oracle shares rose 6.8 per cent, while U.S. shares of ARM Holdings jumped 15.9 per cent. Dell Technologies added 3.6 per cent. Risk appetites have been boosted recently by strong U.S. economic data and cooling inflation along with Mr. Trump's more moderate than feared approach to tariffs since his Monday inauguration. However, investors are still cautiously watching for the President's trade plans owing to inflation concerns.
