The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that seen through 21st-century eyes, Winston Churchill can seem like a ridiculous, even offensive figure. The Globe's Marcus Gee writes that born in a palace, he called Mahatma Gandhi a "half-naked" fakir. A new documentary on Netflix, however, reminds us of his eternal relevance. Churchill at War tells the story of his triumphant leadership during World War Two. It is an oft-told tale, but this concise and vivid version seems especially timely now. Tyranny is on the march again. Russia is pressing on with its brutal war of aggression and conquest against Ukraine, now nearly three years old. Iran is supplying Moscow with weapons and North Korea is sending soldiers. It seems unbelievable that after prevailing over first fascism, then communism in the 20th century, the democracies should be called upon to face another mortal threat to freedom and peace in the 21st. Yet face it we must. Churchill had the sense to see that tyrants cannot be appeased. One way or another, they need to be resisted. Churchill at War recreates the speeches he gave in the House of Commons warning of the Nazi menace and imploring the government to rearm. If only we had someone like that today.
