The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Sept. 6, edition that Netflix's Rebel Ridge is being praised as a powerful American thriller. The Globe's Barry Hertz writes that writer-director Jeremy Saulnier has shifted focus from physical violence to intense dialogue and character development. The violence is portrayed through intense stares, body language and sharp dialogue, resulting in an explosive and captivating film. Taking its cues from the likes of First Blood and Walking Tall -- films in which one good man is forced to go up against an army of small-town corruption -- Mr. Saulnier crafts a dynamic series of stand-offs, accented by moody conspiratorial edges made all the more frightening by the fact that he is not stretching the truth all that much. Although the last mile of the story slows the momentum slightly, this is as fiery an indictment of American darkness as Mr. Saulnier has ever made. Mr. Hertz says the dramatic fireworks are almost enough to carry you through however many years it might take until Mr. Saulnier's next film arrives. The Globe reports that Rebel Ridge streams on Netflix starting Friday.
