The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Canada's job growth stalled in 2025. The Globe's Vanmala Subramaniam writes that Statistics Canada reported a nationwide decline of 28,300 employees or 0.2 per cent, with Ontario experiencing a loss of 45,000 jobs or 0.6 per cent. U.S. tariffs have hit the manufacturing, warehousing and auto sectors hard, leading companies to cut production and lay off workers to manage costs. About 37,000 manufacturing jobs were lost in 2025, according to Thursday's report. At the same time Canada's population is declining due to immigration policy changes aimed at reducing temporary residents. In tandem, the trade war and population slowdown are both playing a role in Canada's sluggish job market, said Indeed Canada's Brendon Bernard. He said: "Both supply and demand factors are driving the flatlining of job growth in 2025. The direct effects of the trade war and now the plateauing of the population is going to mean a soft overall economy." Mr. Bernard predicts that a decline in the temporary resident population may raise job vacancy rates in the food and accommodation industries, as many temporary foreign workers and international students are employed in these sectors.
